Los jóvenes ¿cambiarán el mundo?

Es un hecho que personas cada vez más jóvenes están ocupando espacios de poder cada vez más importantes. Entre la juventud se encuentran ahora políticos influyentes, gerentes de grandes empresas, emprendedores exitosos… Los jóvenes parecen estar tomando el mundo.

Ahora bien, pese a la imagen positiva que tiene la juventud frente a la sociedad, particularmente en este momento en Venezuela, hay que tomarse las cosas con calma. Como en todos los grupos etarios, entre la juventud hay de todo. En seis meses de mochileos he visto a chamos hacer desde cosas realmente admirables hasta otras innombrables.

Entre lo positivo, conviene resaltar el sistema de representación estudiantil presente aquí en Lund. Hay toda una estructura organizada y gobernada por estudiantes, para ayudar a otros estudiantes en aspectos que van desde lo puramente académico hasta excursiones de deportes extremos, pasando por ferias de empleo con contacto directo para su futuro desarrollo profesional. Lo impresionante de todo esto es que en la dirección de las nations y las unions, las organizaciones estudiantiles de aquí, hay un grupo de estudiantes que trabajan por un año de su carrera ad honorem, sin recibir paga, a dedicación exclusiva. Este comportamiento merece respeto y admiración, y debería ser tomado como modelo de desarrollo juvenil.

Pero lo negativo también está ahí. Hace unos meses fuimos parte de un gran viaje estudiantil, con 1.500 chamos de erasmus – estudiantes de intercambio -, en un barco entre Estocolmo y Tallin ida y vuelta. Las condiciones estaban dadas para que aquello se convirtiera en una exhibición de los más puros instintos animales. Unos cuantos estudiantes que reciben dinero del estado – del “primerísimo” mundo - para su formación lo estaban utilizando allí en alcohol, drogas y destrucción del barco en el que estábamos, entre otras cosas. Activaciones intencionales del sistema de alarma de incendios y posterior bebida del agua de los extintores terminaron en gente presa dentro del barco hasta atracar en el siguiente puerto... La intención no es criticar el uso de alcohol o de cualquier psicotrópico; el hecho es que ese dinero viene de los contribuyentes de su país de origen. Hay una especie de burbuja alrededor de algunos de ellos que les dice que no hay más allá que el disfrute de hoy, y que todo lo ganaron en la vida naciendo en un país con altos beneficios sociales.

No obstante, sigue pareciendo lógico ceder más espacios de poder a los jóvenes dados los errores de las generaciones pasadas, y considerando además que la juventud está todo el tiempo cambiando los paradigmas. Hay aspectos que considerar. Un joven no es mejor que otro no tan joven per se. Por dar un ejemplo sencillo se puede tomar el caso de las postulaciones a la Asamblea Nacional. Usando la más elemental lógica y el más puro sentido común se sabe que un Diputado debe tener algún conocimiento legal; debe tener en su haber trabajo en las comunidades de quienes aspira representar; y debe tener una clara serie de propuestas para su gestión. La juventud de un candidato a cualquier cargo – político o de cualquier índole - no debe ser un factor determinante. Es la experiencia y la formación lo que debe ser tomado en cuenta.

La generación en la que el mundo tiene sentadas sus esperanzas de cambio es tan heterogénea que es difícil hacerse una idea del porvenir. El mundo debe cambiar. Injusticias, pobreza, problemas ambientales son algunas de las cosas que esta generación está llamada a desaparecer por el bien de la siguiente. La tendencia a romper los esquemas de los jóvenes al parecer producirá grandes cambios. La naturaleza de estos está por verse…

Will the youth change the world?

It's a fact that more and more young people is taking over important power positions. In the youth is nowadays possible to find powerful politicians, CEOs of big companies, successful entrepreneurs... The youth seem to be taking over the world.

Disregarding the positive image that society has of young people, particularly in this moment, facts have to be analyzed in a calmed way. As in every age group, in the youth there is everything. In six months of backpacking I’ve seen mates do really admirable things; and unnamable things as well.

About the positive, it's convenient to have a look at the students' representation system present here in Lund. There is a whole structure organized and governed by students, meant to support other students in a wide range of aspects: from purely academic issues to extreme sports' trips, including job courts for their future professional development. The impressive fact of this is that the board of directors of the nations and the unions, the students' organizations working here, is a group of students that work full-time for a whole year of their education ad honorem. This behavior deserves respect and admiration, and should be taken as a model of youth development.

Nevertheless, negative facts are also there. A few months ago we were part of a big students' trip, with about 1.500 mates from ESN - exchange students -, a round trip in a ship between Stockholm and Tallinn. The conditions were set to turn that into an exhibition of the purest animal instincts. A few students that receive money from the state - in the "very first" world - to its education were spending it in alcohol, drugs and destruction of the ship in which we were, among other things. Intentional activations of the alarm system and subsequent drank of the water from the extinguishers ended up in people imprisoned inside the ship until the next harbour... The intention is not to criticize the use of alcohol or any other psychotropic; the fact is that that money comes from taxpayers of their country of origin. There is a sort of a bubble surrounding some of them that tells them that there is nothing more than enjoying today, and that everything is fulfilled in life because of being a citizen of a country with a solid welfare state.

It still seems logical to give the chance to more young people to be in power positions considering the mistakes from previous generations, and considering as well the fact that youth is always changing paradigms. There are aspects to consider. A young person is not better than another not so young person per se. To take a simple example a congressman candidate could be considered. From purest logic and common sense it's known that a congressman should have some legal knowledge; should have worked in the geographic area that’s intending to represent; and must have a clear series of proposals. The fact that a candidate to any position - political or any kind - is young shouldn't be so important. It's its experience and the backgrounds what must be taken in account.

The generation in which the world has its hopes of change is so heterogeneous that is difficult to have an idea of the future. The world must change. There is poverty, unfair facts and environmental issues; these are some of the things that this generation must eradicate for the next generations' sake. The trend to break paradigms of the youth could produce big changes. The good or bad nature of the changes remains unclear...
